Accent shrubs bring attention to a specific plant characteristic and in turn draw the eye to the area of the landscape they occupy. They can be evergreen or deciduous and have one or more seasons of interest. This can include stunning foliage color, interesting growth habit, or unique flowers. Accent shrubs can be used in a variety of ways in the landscape or in containers. Many are used outside their cold hardiness range as seasonal interest and color. If containerized, these plants can be overwintered inside or in a protected area and returned outside the following season. Evergreen accent shrubs maintain their leaves year around while deciduous varieties loose their leaves in the fall and re-leaf in the spring.
